Penny-A-Day Program
"The penny's power drives impactful change."
Our Penny-A-Day program started decades ago when members were asked to contribute spare their pennies at club meetings. A bucket or jar would be passed around the meeting and members would toss in their pennies and any loose change they had with the goal to contribute at least $3.65 each year per member. With guests and speakers also contributing when they learned about where the funds go, a lot of change started to accumulate!
Clubs total their funds at the end of the term in June and bring the check to our National Convention to be announced. It is quite the competition to see which club raised the most! At the end of the announcements, the National Treasurer reads the total amount raised and the club hosting the National Convention puts forth a charity or project in the local area for the funds to go to.
Over the years, we have had the privilege of funding incredible local charities and projects. Recently, we supported a mobile bus initiative that traveled through low-income areas, helping teach children how to read, therapeutic recreational horseback riding instruction for riders with disabilities and special needs, and furnishing a home for single mothers and their children to live rent free while mothers work on their educational degree.
Nowadays, fewer people carry spare change, so it's exciting to see the container fill up with paper money. This often inspires others to donate more! Many clubs also implement fun fines on club members visiting from other clubs as a way to contribute to their Penny-a-Day Program.
